Lake Mývatn:It’s located near Akureyri. Lake Mývatn has a very interesting anecdote behind its formation. The lake was formed after a massive volcanic eruption thousands of years ago. The reason is it´s geothermal and very active. It derived the name “Mývatn” because large number of midges gathers around the lake.
The area surrounding Mývatn Lake is one of the famous bird-watching sites in the world. More than 100 species of birds can be found over there, including 13 varieties of ducks. The tufted duck, scaup, wigeon, Barrow's goldeneye, red-breasted merganser, long-tailed duck, teal,. are some of the birds to be found in this place. Barrow's goldeneye breeds only in Iceland. All the birds feed on the numerous aquatic insects found inside the lake.
