The first geyser erupted in Iceland in 14th century. Watching a geyser erupt, even a small one, is a fascinating sight. First, the water starts to boil, then very quickly a bubble forms and bursts as the steam, hotter and lighter than the boiling water, forces its way skywards.
It is breathtakingly beautiful, 33 metres high, with two steps, the first one is 11 metres high, and the other one is 22 metres high and they fall into the 2,5 km canyon. Gullfoss actually means the Golden waterfall (gull-gold, foss-waterfall). The recent history of the waterfall is quite interesting and startling.
"Symbol of the Icelandic Consciousness", is in a rift valley between the American and European geological plates and Lake Thingvellir contains species of fish found nowhere else. During winter it can snow quite a lot and those driving smaller vehicles are advised to familiarise themselves with the road conditions before heading out.
